Tincture. What is it?
Herbal tinctures are a liquid herbal preparation in Alcohol; What does this mean? It means that the
active alkaloids in the herb are fixed on to the alcohol so that when it is
taken, all the active herbal alkaloids are absorbed into the blood stream very
quickly and completely. This makes them far stronger than any powder in a capsule,
which are slowly absorbed through the stomach wall and some of the active
alkaloids are lost.
What this means is that Tinctures are Stronger than powders and the effects can be
noticed much more quickly.
About taking Herbal Tinctures
Herbal tinctures can be measurered using a teaspoon -1 teaspoon is 5ml, or
better yet a child's 5ml medicine spoon. To take the tincture, place the correct amount of
tincture in glass, and then add a very small amount of boiling water (20-30ml) this
will evaporate some of the alcohol. Swish around, drink in all at once.
Tincture Volume and Strengths
Listed on the tinctures you will see the alcoholic Volume, which is the strength
of the alcohol used for preparation. As an example, 45% which is 45% alcohol and the remainder being water. The strength of the tincture, for example 1:3 means that there is 1 part herb
for 3 parts liquid. With this 1:3 equals 1ml tincture containing 333mg
herb.
