Living with Lavender
A little lavender goes a long way — my favorite simple ways to bring a little calm home.
From my hands and my heart, Lila
Lavender didn’t just save my life — it shaped it. For nearly twenty years I’ve grown it here on our Paso Robles estate, distilled it in my father’s favorite copper still, and woven it into almost everything we make. These are the simple, everyday ways I reach for mine — a mist on the pillow (or a few drops on a cotton ball tucked into the pillowcase), a few buds in the lemonade, a little Healing Butter paired with Instant Relief at the end of a hard day. And my favorite of all: a few drops in a warm bath, followed by my personal placement points with pure lavender essential oil.
My Favorite Ritual
The Five-to-Seven-Point Placement
One drop of our pure lavender essential oil, a few quiet places. Start with my everyday five — then follow the chakra line up to seven. Neat and simple.
Pulse Points
Inside one wrist, then press your wrists together to share.
Temples & Ears
Over each temple, or behind each earlobe.
Base of Skull
Where the neck meets the head.
Third Eye · Ajna
A light touch between the brows.
Throat · Vishuddha
The hollow of the throat, above the collarbone.
Heart · Anahata
The center of the chest, over the heart.
Crown · Sahasrara
A whisper of oil at the very top of the head.
On a busy day the first five are plenty — a grounding chakra placement, neat and simple.
New to essential oils on skin? Patch-test first, and dilute with a carrier oil if your skin is sensitive.
At Home
- Mist linens, curtains, and the car with a lavender room spray.
- Tuck sachets into drawers, closets, and luggage.
- A few drops of essential oil in the entryway diffuser.
- Simmer buds with citrus peel for a natural stovetop scent.
For Sleep
- Mist your pillow, or tuck a cotton ball with a few drops into the pillowcase.
- Smooth Dream Balm onto wrists and temples.
- Keep a sachet or eye pillow by your pillow.
For the Body
- Massage lotion into hands and feet after a shower.
- Healing Butter on dry elbows, heels, and cuticles.
- Instant Relief smoothed onto tired shoulders and neck.
In the Bath
- A few drops of lavender in a warm soak — this is my favorite.
- Make a lavender steam: hot water, a towel over your head.
- Seal in the calm with a body balm afterward.
In the Kitchen
- Stir culinary buds into lemonade or a simple syrup.
- Bake lavender shortbread or lemon bars.
- Infuse honey for tea and toast.
- Add a pinch to herbes de Provence.
The Science, Simply
Why does lavender feel so calming? Its scent comes mostly from two natural compounds — linalool and linalyl acetate — released through steam distillation in our copper still. They are what give true lavender its soft, sweet, floral aroma.
