The October Turn

October at Central Coast Lavender: remembering a gift, tending lavender cuttings, and preparing for spring 2027.

The Next Season Begins Here

October 2026 · Central Coast Lavender Almanac

Silver-green leaves catch the light. Between flowering seasons, the detail of lavender comes forward: narrow leaves, branching stems, sunlight along their edges.

At Central Coast Lavender in Paso Robles, October’s work turns toward propagation. We are taking cuttings and tending the next generation with spring 2027 in mind. The lavender we are working with is True Grosso.

A gift remembered

In 2009, our dear friend and lavender sister Sarah Bader shared True Grosso cuttings with us, continuing a lineage passed from farm to farm. We’ve tended it ever since. As we begin another generation of plants, we remember that gift and the care behind it.

Why our True Grosso mother stock matters

In our growing and distilling experience, the look-alike lavender known as ProGrosso, sometimes sold as Grosso, resembles Provence and distills with a Provence-like character. Our mother stock is True Grosso, and the oil we distill from it has a remarkable aromatic profile all its own. Keeping that lineage is part of the reason we propagate from our mother plants.

The work before the rows

A cutting begins with the parent plant. Growing lavender from cuttings carries the parent plant’s characteristics forward; plants grown from cultivar seed can vary. There is practical work in the process: choosing suitable growth, tending the cuttings, and allowing time for roots to establish.

At our farm, row laying is planned for spring 2027. Plant readiness and local conditions will guide the next step. October gives us work to do before that planting season arrives.

Follow October with us

This month, we will follow the plant from its beginnings: the mother stock, the cuttings, and the attention given to the next generation. The lavender between flowering seasons has its own place in that story.
